Game 1:  Karuta


Goal
:  Upon hearing the Arabic words pronounced, be able to identify the English meanings.
Requirements:
1 deck of Aya & Sura Flashcards
Aya & Sura online audio recordings (Search By Number)

Players
:
2 – 4
1 caller/judge (person who plays recordings and checks answers)
How to Play:
  • Players sit in a circle.
  • Spread out all the cards with the English sides facing up.  
  • Have one person, the caller, play the recording of the words from the guide one at a time.  (The players themselves, or an outside person, can take turns being the caller, can be the caller.) 
  • All the players try to be the first one to touch the card with the correct English meaning.
  • The correctness of the selection is verified by the caller/judge.  He or she will check the card number selected by the player by looking at the lower left corner to make sure the number corresponds with the recording that was just played.
  • Whoever touches the correct card first will keep it in their pile. (There are no penalties for an incorrectly selected card.)
How to win:
The game ends when the recordings for all the cards have been played. The player with the most number of cards wins!
Note:
If the players have not correctly identified all the cards after all the recordings have been played, there will be some cards left over.  (Option: The caller can take note of the numbers on the cards and replay the recordings for learning purposes.)
Alternative ways to play:
(1) If there is only one player, there can be a timer.  Players can try to beat their own time each time the game is played.  They can even play the online recordings themselves since the numbers on the cards are small enough not to be noticeable at a distance.
(2) In case there is no access to the internet for the guide, if there is someone who has a good pronunciation (such as an adult), he or she can call out the Arabic words and be the judge.  (Hint:  Having a second deck of Aya & Sura Flashcards would make the caller’s job easier.) 

Game 2:  Round About

Goal:  Upon hearing an English word, be able to pronounce the corresponding
           Arabic word.

Requirements:
1 deck of Aya & Sura Flashcards

Optional:  Access to Aya & Sura Audio recordings (Search by Number)

Optional:  Aya & Sura online audio recordings (Search By Number)


Players
:
2 – 5

Optional:  1 Judge

How to play:

  • Players sit in a circle. 
  • To see who goes first, the cards are shuffled and placed in the middle of the circle with the Arabic side facing up.
  • Each player will draw one card from the deck and turn it to the English side to reveal the card number.  The player with the highest card number will go first.
  • The player who goes first will reshuffle all the cards, then offer to the player on his left to cut the cards.  The cards are then placed back in the middle of the circle with the English side up.
  • The first player takes the first card on top of the deck and reads the English word.
  • The player to his/her left has the opportunity to say the Arabic meaning.  
  • After giving an answer, the player will self-check himself/herself by flipping the card over to reveal the Arabic side. 
  • If the pronunciation is satisfactory, the player who correctly pronounced the Arabic word puts that card in his own personal pile.  He/she then picks up the next card from the pile and reads the English word, offering it to the person on his/her left to read the Arabic word.  The game continues in this pattern.
  • If the player who was offered to read the Arabic meaning makes a mistake, he/she will read the correct Arabic word from the flip side, then place the card under the bottom of the deck.  He or she then draws the next card from the top of the pile and reads the English word.  Play continues as before.

How to Win:

  • Play continues in a clockwise direction until either there are no cards left in the middle, or every player has a had a chance to pronounce each of the missed words.
  • The player with the most cards in their pile is the winner!

Please Note:  

  • If the players are starting out,  the exact pronunciation should not be the first goal. Just getting in the ballpark with the correct pronunciation can count as a win, depending on the level of the players.  (This is where an adult judge can be useful.)
  • If there is a judge, for learning purposes, he/she may choose to take any leftover cards at the end of the game and one by one read the English words followed by the Arabic recordings.
  • In addition to the players self-checking themselves by looking at the Arabic side of the card,  they can request the judge (if any) to play the audio recording of that word.  Then all the players can pronounce the word together.

Alternative Way to Play:

Reverse play of the original game.

Goal:  The goal now is to be able to provide the English meaning when hearing
           another player pronounce the Arabic word.    

This game is played in the same way as the original game, with the following differences:

  • After determining who goes first, the cards are placed in the middle of the circle with the Arabic side face up rather than the English side.
  • The player who takes a card will attempt to pronounce the Arabic word with the help of the transliteration.  (Others can kindly provide assistance if the pronunciation is too far off, or the judge can play the audio recording of that word and everyone can pronounce it together.)
  • The player on the left will try to say the English meaning instead of the Arabic.
  • Play continues as in the original game.

Game 3:  Solo

Goal:  To learn the Arabic pronunciation and/or English meaning of the words on
           the Aya & Sura Flashcards.

Access to Aya & Sura Audio Guide (Search by Number)

How to Play:

There are two ways to play:  

(1)  Learning the Arabic:

  • Look at the English side of each card.
  • Then try to guess the Arabic word and pronounce it. 
  • Next flip the card to the opposite side to reveal the transliteration of the word.  
  • If you are satisfied that you could pronounce the Arabic word correctly,  place it in the “correct” pile.  
  • For those that were not quite right, place them in a second pile for further study.
  • For the words you could not answer, place them in a third pile.
  • Keep a record of the number of cards in each pile. (Correct, Needs Improvement, Incorrect)
  • To check the correct pronunciation of any of the cards, you may  wish to play the recording of the cards with the Aya & Sura Audio Guide (Search by Number) by matching the number on the English side with the number on the audio recording.
  • The next time you play, try to increase the number you got correct!

(2)  Learning the English meanings:

  • Looking at the Arabic side of the cards, try to pronounce the
    Arabic word with the help of the transliteration. 
  • Next try to guess the English meaning of the word.  
  • Flip the card over to self-check.  
  • You may also wish to check the audio guide to see if your pronunciation of the Arabic was correct (See the instructions given in part 1 above.)
  • If you are satisfied that you could say the English meaning,  place it in the “correct” pile.  
  • For the words you could not answer, place them in the “incorrect” pile.
  • Keep a record of your progress (number correct) and try to increase the number you got correct each time you play.


Game 4:  Numbers Game (Using Flashcards)

Goal:  To be able to locate a Surah of the Holy Quran quickly (since many speakers do not always give the number of the Surah they are referring to.)
Please note:  These flashcards reference 26 out of the 114 Surahs of the Holy Quran.  All of the vocabulary cards have an example Ayah from the Holy Quran. On the Arabic side, the Surah name is represented numerically, and on the English side, the name of the Surah is written out.  
How to Play
There are two ways to play
(1) Self Study:
Requirements:

Option:  Use the Table of 26 Surahs below
How to Study:
  • Look at the Arabic side of each flashcard. Notice the Surah name that is referenced for that Ayah.
  • Flip the card over to the English side.  You will see the number of the Surah where the Ayah is located.  Try to find a way to connect this number with the Surah name on the Arabic side.  For example, for Surah Ar-Rum, which means “Romans,” you could imagine that to be an officer in the Roman Army, you need to be 30 years old. (30 is the number of this Surah.)  It will be helpful to know the meanings of the Surah names in English.  (Please refer to “Table of 26 Surahs” below.)
  • Go through all the cards in the same way.  Some Surahs such as Surah Al-Baqarah, the longest Surah of the Holy Quran, are referenced in several of the cards. This is good for reinforcement.  The first Surah, Al-Fatihah will also be easy to remember since it is well-known by every Muslim.
  • When you are ready, you can test yourself by going through the cards again.  Looking at the Arabic side of each card where you see the name of the Surah, see if you can remember the number of the Surah before checking the English side.
(2) Group Play
Requirements:
1 deck of Aya & Sura Flashcards 
Players:
2 – 5
After each player has had a chance to self study the 26 Surahs from the flashcards, they can attempt the Group Play.  This game is played in a round, similarly to how the game “Round About” is played.  The differences are listed below:
  • Instead of reading the words, the player will read the name of the Surah from the Arabic side of the card.
  • The player to the left will attempt to give the number of the Surah.
  • Play continues in the same way as “Round About”.
